8 Photography Tips for Moms

Do you love taking photos of your children? Are you always carrying your camera around, snapping away? If you answered yes, then these 8 photography tips are for you!

Tip #1: Change Your Point of View

Try crouching down to get on the same eye level as your child or stand on a chair and take the photo from above. You’ll be amazed at the difference! A mistake many moms make is not mixing it up. By doing this, you'll get a variety of different photos.

Tip #2: Lighting, Lighting, Lighting

Light is the most important factor to think about when taking photos. Study the light during different times of the day. Choose an indoor area where window light is illuminating the room or take photos outdoors right before the sun sets. You’ll capture beautiful golden light in your images.

Tip #3: Creativity is Key

Another great tip it to let your child do the creative thinking. Not every photo needed to be posed. Capture them having fun! Make them feel involved. Show them the photos on the back of the camera. You’ll be surprised have much better your photos will turn out when you child is having fun!

Tip #4: Keep Them Entertained

Have some tricks up your sleeve! Taking a good posed photo of your child can be challenging. Give them a toy to play with or offer a lollipop or stickers to keep them involved. Give them a chair to sit on to prevent them from running off. A happy child is a cooperative child!

Tip #5:  Lose the “Smile” & “Cheese”

Avoid cheesy/fake smiles by changing up your lingo. Try words like “bibbity bobbity BOOO” or sing Happy Birthday. Don’t be afraid to be silly. Make noises! If you are having fun, they are more likely to smile. Tell them a story about a character they love. When you make that connection, you get great, natural images.

Tip #6: Don’t Forget About YOU

Years from now, your child will love seeing photos of you. Get in the picture! Use a self-timer or ask a friend of family member to take photos of you playing with your child. The photo doesn’t have to be perfect or posed. Candid shots are great, too!

Tip #7: Let Kids Be Kids

Capture your child in their natural environment. Just let them play! Don’t direct them or tell them where to stand or to smile. Take a few steps back. They may even forget you are there. Time flies by so fast, you’ll want to have images to help you remember the little moments and their personality.

Tip #8: Props Are Fun!

Sometimes it hard to get a great facial expression out of your little one. Adding props to your photos can really help to add interest to the shot. Your baby, infant, or toddler may even interact with the prop giving you a great picture!

Fairfield County, CT Newborn Photographer - Baby Charlotte - Kendra Rojas Photography

Kendra Rojas Photography specializes in newborn, children & family photography, in Fairfield County, CT and the surrounding areas.

This sweet baby girl was 17 days old the day of her photo session. While most newborn photographer prefer to photograph babies when they are brand new (under two weeks old) so that they are super sleepy, sometimes it isn't possible. Whether baby spends a little more time in the hospital after birth or momma isn't feeling up to a photo session right away, it is my job to provide beautiful portraits that families will treasure forever.

Baby Charlotte was amazing and slept for most of the session! Check out her big, fur brother's cameo is a few of the photos. This session was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed spending time with this family!

A Few of My Favorite Things: Periscope! - Kendra Rojas Photography

If you haven’t heard of Periscope, you should definitely check it out!

If you follow Photographers & Creatives, I’m sure you’ve seen or heard about this new little thing call Periscope. Periscope is an app from Twitter where you can broadcast LIVE from anywhere in the world, anytime you’d like, for as long as you like for FREE. Your followers can tune-in to watch you live, or they can watch a replay of your video for up to 24 hours after your live broadcast.

Even though Periscope is gaining major visibility, so far the app has only been accessible to iPhone users. Enter Telescope, a third-party Periscope app for Windows Phones, which expands the service's live streams to an entirely new audience. You can't actually broadcast your own “Scope” from the Telescope app yet (the developer says it's coming), but you can sign up for Periscope and view other live feeds from within the app. It will do for now until Twitter releases the official Windows Phone client.

Now you have no excuse not to try it! Come IPhones, come Androids! LOL!

I joined a few weeks ago, and am absolutely obsessed! Many photographers who inspire me, “Scope” regularly and it’s great to see them in their natural element. They share useful information and “behind the scenes” footage from their sessions. If you are a photographer, creative or business owner (or just want to check it out for fun!) it’s an AMAZING app to utilize for your business and also to gain insight into businesses you're interested in!

I’m still figuring out all of the ins-and-outs, but I’m totally into it! If you tune in live, you have the ability to live comment and interact with the "Scoper" and fellow viewers right then and there.

I’ve been working up the nerve to do my own “Scope”. As many of you know, I am a behind-the-camera type of person, but I think it’s time to make my Periscope debut.

Please give it a try and follow me at @KendraRPhotography to see sneak peeks into my business, behind the scenes + my life outside of work!  Join now, follow me and expect to see my first "Scope" within the next day or two!

Liberty Elyse - Blessing Ceremony - Kendra Rojas Photography - Fairfield County, CT Newborn & Children's Photographer

This past weekend I captured Miss Liberty Elyse's beautiful Blessing Ceremony at West Haven Beach. Vibrant and full of life, Liberty wore a pink and white dress with the cutest hot pink barefoot sandals! Surrounded by her closest family and friends, Liberty's life and name were honored.

It's amazing how far this little girl has come. Born 6-weeks early, she spent the first few weeks of her life in the NICU. You'd never be able to tell now! This little girl is thriving! Such a blessing to her friends and family, and the world. <3

I hope you enjoy these images from Liberty's Blessing Ceremony!

Spring is finally here in Fairfield County, CT, and Kendra Rojas Photography couldn't be more ready! The winter was a long one, but now that flowers are budding, birds are chirping, and we've even had a few days of short-sleeve weather, it's time to get outside!

Alex, Marcela and I took a trip to Beardsley Park in Bridgeport, CT to have a little photo session this past weekend. Marcela is really walking now so I spent most of the time chasing her around with the camera......and it was glorious :) Hope you enjoy!

Fairfield County, CT Family Photographer - Tips on Getting the Most Out of Your Child's Photo Session! - Kendra Rojas Photography

I just had the pleasure of doing a session with the grandchildren of my husband’s friend from work! Don’t get me wrong the scene was a bit hectic as there were three boys under two, and an eight-year-old girl. I was definitely exhausted by the time we finished, but the end result really turned out nice!

Got me to thinking, that putting together a few tips on how to get the most out of your child’s photo session might be helpful!

They say that toddlers are the hardest subjects to shoot, as they don’t listen to direction and any poses you had in mind fly right out the window. But once you let go of all those expectations of how you think the session should go and just go with the flow, everything comes together. Capturing your little one’s personality is my number one goal and to do that we just have to let them be.

Take a look at my tips below. I’ve illustrated with a few photos from the session. I hope you like it!

Tips on Getting the Most Out of Your Child's Photo Session!

Schedule your photo session during your child's upbeat time of day. Coordinate with naps and feedings. A sleepy, hungry child can’t enjoy the experience, and that’s what this is all about.

Build up the photo session as much as you can by talking to your child about it and let them know what to expect. Clean your child’s face, hands, nose and teeth prior to the session.

Bring along necessary items to help keep your child happy and clean (diapers, wipes, a favorite toy and blanket). Bring along some personal props - costumes, hats, or toys that highlight your little ones personality.

When picking out your child's wardrobe, think bold and bright. Simple is always best, no busy stripes or pattern. The goal it to capture your child’s true self. Choose a look that reflects your child's personality. For family portraits, it's best to choose a color palate and coordinate from there.

Something really important to remember is that it’s absolutely fine if your child acts like a child. Sometimes a frown or a smirk can make a great portrait. Not every picture has to be perfectly posed.

I may need your help! Crawlers and new walkers love their freedom. We’ll work together to corral and conquer! Also, you know your little one best. I may need you stand over my shoulder to help get those precious smiles. :)

RELAX- Breathe in and out! The photo session should be about having fun and capturing your little one in all their glory! Let go of your expectations.  It’s good to come with certain hopes for the shoot, but be sure to not hold too tightly to those expectations. Open your mind, breathe, and have fun!

Fairfield County, CT Family Photographer - Cake Smash Madness! - Kendra Rojas Photography

I had so much fun with Marcela!! She was a little hesitant at first. She didn't want to get her hands dirty! But she warmed up after a bit. :)

With every session I do, I'm realizing just how much I love to photograph children. They are sincere in everything they do and have an energy that makes it so much fun to work with them. Who am i kidding?  Photographing children is just an excuse to for me to bring out my inner child. I absolutely love to laugh, play and have fun, and that's exactly what we did! Enjoy <3

Fairfield County, CT Family Photographer - Welcome to my first Blog post! - Kendra Rojas Photography

I’d like to welcome you to my first blog post, ever! I am so excited to start keeping an on-going collection of what a day in the life of Kendra Rojas Photography looks like. And I am so thankful that you are coming along for the ride!

My intentions for this blog are for it to be a creative outlet that will help my business reach out to those interested in the work I create. I hope to share and inspire you with my vision of what beauty entails, seen through my eyes and a camera.

For my first blog post, I've chosen to display some images of a special little girl named Liberty Elyse! This "little warrior" was born 6 weeks early and spent the first few weeks of her life in the NICU. I've watched this little girl thrive and grow! Such a strong little girl with even stronger parents. And so incredibly cute!! See for yourself! <3

I feel so honored to be able to capture lasting memories for my clients. I hope my current and prospective clients realize that yes, I am preserving a moment in time for them to look back on for years to come, but they are also helping me create my own history by supporting this creative pursuit, which I call Kendra Rojas Photography, and I'd like to say thank you!
